Brian – My Pride Story

My name is Brian. This is my story.

I’m a gay disabled United States Navy veteran.

I first attempted to join the military in 2007 under an ROTC scholarship. Unfortunately for me at the time, university is where I started to discover myself and my sexuality.

“Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” was still in place and I failed out of the program under the strain of attempting to hide my true nature from my fellow cadets and my family.

Luckily, the DADT policy was overturned but I was still saddled with debt from the government. Despite being at one of the lowest points of my life I met someone I fell in love with, my current husband Jim.

I enlisted in the Navy so I could have my ROTC debt forgiven, as I didn’t want to attach my debt to him. We were married shortly after I was promoted at my first command and I could not have possibly made it through everything I did without his support.

I feel that there’s value in sharing my story. It demonstrates how queer love, despite the challenges thrown at us, can still blossom into something truly beneficial for everyone. With our relationship, we’ve become so much more together than we ever would have been alone.

Happy Pride!
