Victor – My Story

This photo was taken in 2007 when we took my parents to Las Vegas for a vacation. I cherish the memories of that trip.

My name is Victor. This is my story.

30 years ago I came out to my parents. It was the scariest thing I ever experienced as I was afraid of their rejection, of losing them.

My parents and I were close, but they were also very traditional, devout Catholics. But I knew I had to come out to them because I had fallen in love with someone who did not want to be in a relationship filled with secrets and lies.

I flew up to visit and an hour before I had to leave, I told my parents I was gay. They responded in silent shock, followed by my mom’s crying and sobs. We talked quietly, I responded to all their questions, and I ended up crying as well. I finally just said that I had not changed, that I was still their son who loved and respected them and that I wanted to continue being their son.

I also told them that I had met someone who I wanted to share my life with, Jim. When I left, we kissed and I gave them long hugs. I told them I wanted to see them again and for them to meet Jim. The next time my parents and I met I brought Jim with me to have lunch. I introduced him to them and they treated him like a guest, politely asking him about his background.

Jim was polite, respectful, well mannered, and answered their many questions. My mom kept offering him more food, asking him whether he was full, and whether he was enjoying the food. I sighed in relief, realizing that my parents liked him.

As the years passed, my parents learned to love Jim, and accept him as their son’s husband. Jim became a loved family member, son in law, brother in law, and uncle.

I will never regret coming out to my parents, and I will always be thankful for their unconditional love & support.

Happy Pride!
