What Does Pride Mean To Me?

“Pride means several things and is particularly significant to me. Pride, by definition, is a dignified sense of one’s character, and a sense of celebration.

I am proud to celebrate who I am, as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. It is only one part of who I am, but it is a very significant part of my identity and personhood.

Pride means visibility. It was not that long ago that LGBTQIA+ people were forced to hide who they were, due to stigma, fear-mongering, and false assumptions. Thanks to the tireless efforts of our community elders and warriors, we have made significant headway in erasing those negative stereotypes and accusations.

I can hold my partner’s hand, and introduce him as my partner, without shame or fear, thanks to our predecessors’ hard work and bravery. Visibility matters, not just from a sense of pride, but also as a beacon and a gesture for those who are not ready to come out, or are concerned for their safety.

I wear my Kaiser Pride Pin as a kind symbol to our KP members, that says, “You are safe to be who you are with me.” I hope that my visibility also encourages others to hold their head up high and be proud of who they are. It also means fostering a community of acceptance and safety.

Although we are proud all year-round, Pride Month is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate our many heroes: Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, Harvey Milk, Bayard Rustin, Alan Turing, James Baldwin, Larry Kramer, and the list goes on quite a bit! These are the people who worked tirelessly to build up our community of support, and are a reminder that discrimination and hate have no place in our society. Right now, our trans brothers and sisters are in need of support and safety, and it is imperative that we rally around each other. Pride is a reminder that we all need to care for one another, no matter how we identify.

I am also a proud member of the Kaiser Pride BRG, and I appreciate that Kaiser continues to provide an inclusive and accepting environment to its employees! I had never felt comfortable or safe to be out at my previous jobs, it was such a relief that Kaiser Permanente fosters an inclusive workplace.

I feel safe, AND proud, to be who I am here.

Happy Pride, this month, and all year-round!” – Adrian, Los Angeles
